Seminar Current Topics in Economics of Innovation and Education

In this seminar, we will discuss emerging topics in economics of innovation and economics of education. One focus of the seminar is on the effect of education on innovation processes in companies. We thereby analyze how different types of education (vocational or academic) affect innovation.

The distinction between vocational and academic education and the effect of these two educational types on economic outcomes lasts for at least four decades in the economic literature. While several studies highlight advantages of academic education for innovation and growth, vocational education is getting more and more important in the ongoing political debate. One reason for this interest of policy makers in vocational education is the low youth unemployment rates in Germany and Switzerland during the last financial crisis. But the benefits of vocational education go beyond youth unemployment and also affect innovation.

In this seminar, we will analyze the effect of education on innovation in greater detail. We will review the theoretical and empirical literature on this topic and discuss different viewpoints. Therefore, the topics of the seminar range from education and innovation systems to innovation processes in companies. The topics of the seminar will, for example, cover knowledge diffusion in education systems, university, and industry collaborations, and education as part of innovation systems.



During the introductory meeting on October 19th, 2018, I will give a general introduction into the topic, present the topics of seminar papers, and will give some hints on academic writing. Moreover, I will present the formal guidelines for a seminar paper. The introductory meeting provides enough time to clarify any questions that might come up. After the introductory meeting, seminar participants can choose their topic by sending three preferences to me. Participants work on the topics in groups of two. Deadline for submitting the preferences is October 26th, 2018. I will publish the group allocation on my website on October 29th 2018.

I offer two consultations during the seminar for each group. Consultations are most helpful while defining the focus and while outlining the seminar paper.

On November 23rd, 2018 each group is required to submit an extended abstract for peer review. Please send the extended abstract to rupietta{at} Two seminar participants will independently review one abstract. The review shall be no longer than 1 page in total. Reviews are due on November 30th, 2018. After reading the reviews, I will send the reviews to the groups on December 3rd, 2018.

The due date for the seminar paper and the presentation slides is January 18th, 2019 at 11:59 am. Please submit your papers electronically as PDF documents. For the presentation, you may either submit PowerPoint or PDF files.

The block seminar will be on February 1st, 2019.
