Research Seminar: Economics and Management of Innovation
The focus of this research seminar is on empirical research in the social innovation and social entrepreneurship domain. After an introduction into the topic and academic writing, students will work on their own empirical research project. Available topics cover organizational and contextual factors for implementing social innovations and engaging in social entrepreneurial activities.
The seminar will contain:
· Literature research in a predefined research area
· Selection and application of theoretical models
· Formulation of research questions and hypotheses
· Independent but guided empirical research
· Data preparation and analysis with STATA
· Academic writing
· Presentation and discussion of research results
Introductory meeting on October 14, 2021
You will receive an introduction into social innovation and social entrepreneurship research and the topics available for seminar papers as well as the relevant data sets. After the introductory meeting, students will choose the topic of their seminar paper and submit two preferences until October 17, 2021. All deliverables will be written in groups of 2-3 team members. Students will find the topic allocations and team compositions in Moodle on October 19, 2021.
Academic writing session on October 21, 2021
The second session will cover the structure of empirical papers in detail. We will analyze which function each section of an empirical paper has and will especially focus on the structure of the introduction. This session supports students in structuring their first deliverable (an extended abstract) and in writing the seminar paper.
Presentation of extended abstracts on November 18, 2021
The due date for the submission of the extended abstract and presentation slides is November 16, 2021 (11:59 am). In the session, each group will get 15 minutes to present their proposed research project. After that, there will be room for questions and feedback from other participants. Both the extended abstract and the presentation shall contain the theoretical foundation of the seminar paper, the planned empirical strategy, and a work schedule.
STATA tutorial on November 25 and December 2, 2021
The tutorial covers an introduction to the software, an applied refresher on regression analysis and data preparation with training data sets. For the STATA tutorial no prior knowledge on using statistical software is required. Knowledge on quantitative methods at an intermediate level is expected.
Presentation of empirical analysis on February 3, 2022
The due date for the submission of the presentation slides is February 1, 2022 (11:59 am). In the session, each group will get 15 minutes to present the results of their empirical analysis. After that, there will be room for questions and feedback from other participants. The presentation shall cover the theoretical foundations of the seminar papers very briefly; describe the empirical design and the data; summarize the (preliminary) main findings; and give an outlook on further steps.
Submission of the seminar paper on February 11, 2022
The due date for the seminar paper is February 11, 2022 (11:59 am). Please submit your paper electronically as PDF documents via Moodle.
